For the latest STEM challenge students designed a raft using straws, tape, and cling wrap. Students rated their rafts based on the number of nickels they could hold without sinking. After testing their rafts students discussed how they could have made their rafts to hold more nickels, and wrote about what they would change if designing a second raft. |

Students are all at different points in their genius hour projects. Some are still gathering the information they need to complete their projects. Others have the information they need, but they are organizing it, and developing a practical plan for executing their projects, while others have already begun working on their projects. Students' project topics include:
-a website about mastering Madden '15 -reconstructing bratz dolls to look more realistic -life in the deep sea -toothpick architecture and engineering -a website about common video game glitches -designing an effective paper football field and paper footballs -making Play-Doh aliens -modern dance characteristics, choreography and costumes -designing a rocket that can launch with baking soda and vinegar -making a scented teddy bear model out of clay For the latest STEM challenge students used classroom materials to create a chain reaction. From these pictures you can tell that students were engaged in cooperative learning, as they creatively engineered their chain reactions.
Native American storyteller, author, and musician Joseph Bruchac visited the Lower School this week, and gave a terrific presentation. During the presentation, Mr. Bruchac shared music from traditional Abenaki instruments, a few porquoi stories (a.k.a origin stories), and other information about the Abenaki culture. His presentation was incredibly engaging and informative. Mr. Bruchac allowed time for a question and answer session at the end of the visit, and students came up with impressive questions for him. After we came back to class Buckeye Brain Machines wrote Mr. Bruchac thank you letters, which were heart-warming to read. I know he is going to be thrilled when he receives them.
